So why are adventure courses and other outdoor pursuits suddenly so popular? For one thing they provide an escape from our everyday lives. In the present age we are so used to a steady routine of work and home life that sometimes we forget there is more to the world than just our office and our living rooms. Also sometimes daily life can become a grind and we feel the need to break free from the routine that has become so familiar to us.
A day out on an adventure course or enjoying an outdoor pursuit can provide the perfect antidote to this, by taking us out of ourselves and soothing anxiety and stress. What better form of stress release could there be than screaming at the top of your lungs as you plummet through the air on the country’s longest zip-wire?
Outdoor pursuits can also give you a renewed perspective on the world. They bring you back to the basics of life by taking you up close and personal to the wonders of nature. After a day of kayaking, climbing or mountain-biking in the fresh air it’s easy to let go of the small things that irritate us, such as what Maureen said at the water-cooler or the stain on your work suit that won’t come out. You’ll feel calmer, at peace and more able to deal with the strains and stresses we all experience in our lives.
Also, of course, there’s the thrill of adventure, perhaps even the vague threat of danger that is so captivating to human nature. We all like to be shaken up a little, to get an injection of adrenaline; it’s what makes us feel truly alive.
Why not suggest to your employer a corporate away day to such a venue? It will benefit both you and the company that you work for.
