Leadership Games

June 26th, 2009 · No Comments

Leadership is an ephemeral thing. How do you define it? Teach it? Harness it? Plainly, it’s the ability to lead. In a work environment, among the levels of management, leadership is a quotable quality. It is imperative that people be led and that there be leaders to lead them, and that they do so consistently, fairly, and smartly. Finding leaders is, in and of itself, not a problem.

The problem is that leadership is often a hidden quality. It lurks in the subconscious, rarely coming to the fore when needed. Thus we have the concept of the leadership game and, to a lesser extent, the corporate away day.

A form of teambuilding game, a leadership game is one wherein the participants work on – what else – leadership. They do not necessarily learn how to lead so much as they learn when and where to lead, which is almost as important.

Much like other teambuilding games, leadership games are best played in an isolated, secluded environment, among a specially selected group of participants. A corporate away day or activity day is the perfect opportunity to indulge in leadership games. An adventure centre, specializing in adventure courses and outdoor pursuits and activities, can be the perfect place to have said corporate away day.

Amidst various outdoor activities – camping, for instance – leadership games will be easy to set up and play through in a ‘real-world’ environment. Doing so will strengthen both the impact and result of the games, leading to a true upswing in leadership abilities among your employees!
